I have found that hostgators server reliability is poor. There customer service is OK if you have a simple question that a grade school kid can answer. But if you run into real problems, like why the server your vps is residing on is rebooting twice a day and staying down for an hour or more between reboots, you won't get any info on what's wrong or what they are doing to fix it, if anything. The physical server my VPS resides on has been having to be rebooted twice a day and they don't seem to care to fix it or relay the cause and the actions they are goinig to take to rectify the situation. I'm done with them. If you're a noob and uptime isn't important and you enjoy copy/pasted canned responses from tech support, go for it.

Control panel is a little clunky. I only used their shared hosting plan before outgrowing it and switching, if you expect much out of shared hosting, this wouldn't be the provider to use, they cram a TON of sites on their servers. Overall probably a good deal for toying with a site that won't see much traffic. VPS may be better, tech support is lacking.
